For sports referees and umpires, some things that take place during a game are beyond their control. Sometimes crazy stuff just happens. And it becomes the official’s job is to react sensibly and make sure the game proceeds by the rules.
However there are other parts of officiating which are absolutely within the referee’s control. These small parts of the game should never be taken for granted. Control these simple things and it will get your game off to a good start.
Be on time. There is no excuse for the hurried referee that rushes to get dressed and ready for their game. Get to the site early, meet your partners and discuss mechanics and situations. Use pre-game time to get comfortable with where you are and with whom you are working. It is much easier to relax, reflect and prepare yourself when time is not an issue.
Look your best
When you take the floor or the field look like you are ready for whatever comes your way. Your uniform should always be neat, your appearance clean and everything should look in its proper order. The disheveled referee or umpire looks unprofessional and unprepared, creating a terrible first impression. Before the game begins, always look alert and professional.
Don’t socialize before the game Say hello to those people you know, but keep your focus primarily on the game you are there to observe. That means no extended conversations with fans or others in attendance. This is especially true with coaches. Keep any meetings short and sweet. Then go to your observation spot and turn your attention to what you are there to watch. Use time before the game to ready yourself mentally for what is to follow.
Before the game begins, take control of the small things and get every game or match started the right way. Then it will be much easier to handle the less predictable things that are bound to come next.
