Become a Referee in North Dakota

The North Dakota High School Activities Association oversees officials of the following sports: baseball, basketball, football, soccer, hockey, volleyball and wrestling. To become a referee or umpire in North Dakota, you must begin by registering with the NDHSAA. Registration for new officials should be done prior to July 1st for the upcoming sports year.

The registration can be completed online. Once you register, you will have access to online clinics to learn the rules of your sport.

You are also required to attend a local workshop geared toward using proper signals and mechanics while applying rules in game situations.
To become certified you must complete and pass the officials’ test on the NFHS exam site. A passing grade of 75% is required.

North Dakota Sports Officials Training

North Dakota sports officials must retake the NFHS rules exam each year prior to the start of the season. In addition, they must attend the officials’ workshop and also attend an online rules clinic. Every two years, referees and umpires must take the NFHS concussion management course to learn what to do in these types of situations.

To stay certified, referees and umpires are advised to renew their registration yearly with the NDHSAA by July 1st. After that date, registration is extended, but a late fee will be applied. Deadlines for final registration vary depending on the season in which the sport is played.
