Become a Referee in Alaska

High school referees and umpires in Alaska are certified each year under the direction of the ASAA. The Alaska School Activities Association oversees officials for many sports including: baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball, hockey, wrestling and volleyball.

To become a referee in Alaska you must take the NFHS rules exam and receive a passing grade of 75% correct.

Alaska officials are required to sign a Code of Ethics which outlines what is expected of them. Key points of this code include:

  • A mastery of the rules and mechanics of their sport
  • A pledge to act with honor and dignity when interacting with anyone in their role as an official.
  • A pledge to be prepared both mentally and physically while being on-time for all assignments.
  • An understanding of how to manage the game and an awareness of the NFHS concussion management guidelines.

In other words, Alaska officials are expected to take pride in their role as an official and conduct themselves in a way that shows respect for the game and those that have a part in it.
